What is corruption?
There is no universal definition of corruption. It is a broad term which takes into its set a lot of other subsets like baksheesh, bribery, collusion, nepotism, cartel,...,...,... The list is endless...
There also are philosophical, legal, moral, geographical variations which may include one form and exclude another....
Simply speaking corruption is abuse of power and/or money. My understanding of corruption is - it is a deviation from ideal course of proceedings, brought about by a person or a group of persons, who put selfish interests before those of the society and nation...
As with every crime, I think, intention is the basic element that distinguishes a corrupt from non-corrupt individual...
But the 'ideal course of proceedings' part makes almost everyone in this world corrupt. I mean, how many people actually get a learning license before learning driving..., I don't know a single one.... are they corrupt? May be they are, may be they're not, may be they are and they are not! Its ambiguous!
I think medicine has an answer here... This is quite analogous to dilemma of a clinical sciences, -" when does an abnormality become a disease?" - a clinician would say that, when it causes enough discomfort to restrict a normal functional behavior.
But that too has exceptions. Like cancer, which is a 'disease' since much before it manifests. And there are abnormalities which are never grave enough to be a disease... Quite ambiguous again, isn't it? Ah!
That's why I miss mathematics so much... No ambiguities-no grey areas.. Absolutely simple or Simply Absolute...
But, nonetheless, who needs absolution of mathematical principles in day to day life? Human conscience is capable enough to deal with ambiguities; or Modern medicine would have been absolute impossibility.
So can we say, that the corruption is corrupt enough to be corrupt when it hampers normal functional dynamics of society such that, it becomes a threat to its growth or progress ? The question is, of course, rhetoric...
Again, this raises another question here, ( and this one is not so rhetoric!) is corruption, in small amount, justified ?
Absolutely not! Not in mini-, micro-, or even nano- amounts...
But Selfishness IS...!
For selfishness is as old and eternal as, not just humanity, but Life itself!
If there were ever any social characteristic of life, then it wud be Selfishness!
I think Charles Darwin might agree... Or he might not... Who knows?
